Amateur Radio Club
From BeavrWiki
Here are some common misconceptions about the OSU Amateur Radio Club:
You must have a license to be involved You must have experience with radios, computers, or electronics. You cannot use the club's equipment to communicate unless you are licensed to operate. We're just a bunch or radio geeks, and we never have fun. Well we hope to clear up these misconceptions that you may have. First of all, a license is not required to become involved in the OSU ARC. We're happy to share the shack with any interested individuals. In order to operate (transmit) on amateur bands, the operator is required to have a license or may operate under the supervision of a licensed amateur. This means, that you can even use our club equipment as long as there is a licensed operator in the shack with you.
Experience with radios, computers, or electronics is not required. We are quite happy to show new members around and help them with operating equipment. The idea is that as new members enter, they'll learn more about our hobby and (hopefully) pass it on to others.
And finally yes, we are just a bunch of radio geeks, but contrary to some beliefs, we certainly do know how to have fun! For example, every June we participate in Field Day. This is where we pack up batteries, radios, and camping equipment. We spend a weekend in the wilderness operating on emergency power. This is a world-wide radio event, so there's always plenty of people to talk to. Plus, when you're exhausted from operating, we can go swimming, fishing, boating, etc. We also meet every Sunday for an informal "Sundays in the Shack." This is where we meet up and hang out.
