Take your vitamins and get lots of sleep! Getting sick is almost a routine in school. If you are able to eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and sleep, you will be amazed at how often you can miss getting sick when all of your friends are!
Try to get as many scholarships as you can! Even if you don't think you will need them, you never know what's going to happen in the future. It's not just important to plan, but there are many other things that that money can be used for.
Don't stress! It won't do you any good to stress over anything! And they are just things (or maybe people)! Find a way to vent by exercising, having fun, or talking with good friends. The things that might cause you stress are just temporary, not permanent; you can control how they effect you. Most things you can't change so focus on the things you can change and let the others go.
Try and exercise a couple times a week. Dixon Rec Center is one of the best in Oregon. Its paid for in your student fees so take advantage of it. College is a great time to create healthy lifestyles that you can stick with. Its a great way to take a break from studying, meet new people, and keep off that Freshman 15. Other ways are to participate in Intramural sport teams or take fun PAC classes like ultimate frisbee, tennis, basketball, or bowling.
Meet as many people as you can!! Go sit with someone completely random at lunch and strike up a conversation. Ask people in your classes if they want to create a study group. Although it may seem awkward at first, this is how you meet people. Hey, who knows, you might even find that special someone. Don't be an isolationist. Get off AIM and go chat with your friends over coffee. I guarantee the conversation will be much more interactive and interesting.
Party responsible. Don't be an idiot and try and drive after pounding 5 beers. A DUI is not something you want to get, and thats not even the worst that can happen. Make sure to watch after your friends when your drinking. You don't have to be their mom, but you can tell when someone has had enough and its your duty as a friend to cut them off.
Don't skip class, or at least not every week. Your friends arn't going to like you when you beg to copy 50 pages of their notes because you thought watching reruns of Full House was a better way to spend your time. If you want to actually learn something in college, attending lectures is the only way you will get the whole picture. Sparknotes may pass you through a couple quizzes but its not gonna write an essay on ignominy for you.
Don't save up all your homework for the weekend. You can't read 6 straight chapters and expect to remember it all. Space out your studying throughout the week so you learn as you attend lectures. Having a day calender or someway of keeping track of future homework assignments and midterms is also very helpful.
Make sure to make a good use of all your time, not spending all of it on one particular thing or subject. Don’t spend over an hour working on one particular thing, its harder to absorb everything if you spend hours working on one thing and don’t take a break. Have fun too, college isn’t just about homework and classes you need to mix your social life in there somehow. There needs to be a happy middle ground.
Unless you really are a morning person, don’t take classes at 8 a.m., it’s just going make it that much harder to pay attention, get good grades, and more importantly go to class.
Make sure you take classes that you are actually interested in, and those classes that you aren’t necessarily interested it helps to take the class with a friend, that way you can be each other motivators to go to class.
As a junior now in college I have spent a lot of time stressing out about just about everything you can imagine. It has taken two years now for me to finally realize the best way to eliminating or if that’s not possible, at least decreasing the stress in my life. Now that I have figured out the secret to coping with stress I feel as though I owe it to inform you all. The best thing I have found to do is take one fun class per term. No matter what your interests are, OSU I am sure offers a course that will be enjoyable for you. I personally try to take a physical activities course, or PAC class, every term with a few of my friends. Not only am I able to hang out with my friends and exercise, I receive a credit for it. So save yourself ahead of time, find some friends, pick a class, and watch the stress go down the drain.
Time Management
In college time management is one of the most important skills to learn. Yeah sure there are times, correction there are many times that a student will feel overwhelmed by all the activities they are participating in and school.
A few things to start out with to help in time management of all your activities are to figure out which is most important or consider what you priorities are in descending order. How much time you are willing to spend on each activity and whether it is a good idea to stack certain activities on the same day.
When setting a time limit on what activity you are doing helps motivate an individual on finishing a certain amount of work within that time limit. Make sure you end up doing a little everyday consistently because this process reduces the chances of burning out on one activity. The problem with being burned out from one activity is that one working on another there tends to be a lack of quality and the individual will work on the activity properly.
Once again, stressing on working on activities a little everyday will help in making more time for individuals to include their favorite activities. These activities could include dancing, gaming, basketball, tennis, etc.
